How long is How to Fish?
A clear answer about what is known, and what is not.
There is no official completion-time estimate, and we do not publish an invented hour count. The Steam reviews we read on October 8 list playtimes mostly between about 5 and 15 hours on record, and the Bean achievement (finish within one hour) shows a fast run is possible.
What the sources do show
On October 8 the Steam reviews we read showed playtimes such as 15.3, 9.8, 8.9 and 8.3 hours on record, and recent reviews at 5.4, 6.7, 7.5, 7.7, 12.3 and 12.7 hours. Earlier we also saw one at 2.5 hours. That includes co-op sessions, gambling and exploring, and reviewers write at different points, so it is not a measured completion time. Separately, the Bean achievement asks you to finish the game within one hour, which tells you a finish that short exists. Steam guides about it report both short and longer runs.

Progression involves quests and bosses that open access to further islands. Completion time depends on your group and play style. See the map for how islands unlock.
Does difficulty change the time?
Patch 1.0.9 added easy and hard modes: easy gives all creatures 25% less health and 50% less damage, hard gives them 25% more health and 25% more damage. Fights will take less or more time accordingly, but the notes do not give a completion time for either.

Did the Islet Update add time?
Patch 1.1.0 added mini islands, a mini-boss, a weapon, a bait, an NPC and new achievements. The notes give no hours. See euros and the bow.

Do not treat a single player's speedrun as a normal playthrough estimate. Decide with your group whether you are progressing or exploring. A useful estimate needs multiple dated player reports and a clear definition of completion, so we leave the hour count unconfirmed.
